Spec Your Material Handling Feeders for Mining with MPT

spec for material handiling equipment MPT

Material handling equipment keeps your processing circuit running smoothly, but the wrong feeder can break your operation. Choosing between apron feeders, push feeders, and pan feeders matters, and the decision depends on your material characteristics and where each feeder sits in the circuit. MechProTech (MPT) helps mining operations across South Africa and around the world get this right, offering reliable, heavy-duty feeders engineered to match your feed rate targets.

The Role of Feeders in Material Handling

Feeders are essential to every processing plant. Without a steady, predictable feed rate, other equipment like crushers and screens either choke or run underutilised. Conveyors downstream also suffer when feed is inconsistent. The material type is a key factor in selecting suitable feeders.

MPT’s extensive range of feeders, including apron feeders, push feeders, and pan feeders, is designed to maintain controlled material flow. Each machine is developed and assembled in-house at MPT’s Benoni factory, where equipment is test-run before dispatch.

Understanding Apron Feeders

Apron feeders are central to material handling in mining and other heavy-duty applications. Designed for high-capacity performance, apron feeders handle coarse and sticky materials, including large lumps, and are suitable for feeding primary crushers or screens in wet conditions.

MPT’s TITAN AFM apron feeders are built with the following:

  • Robust undercarriage track chain with segmented impact-resistant steel top bed feeder plates and replaceable slats for easy maintenance
  • Support rollers with an integrated subframe and spring-tension tail-end take-up rollers
  • Lifetime sealed chain slat support rollers contribute to minimal maintenance
  • Single-location greasing point for easy access to lubrication
  • VSD technology for varying speeds under different process conditions

Apron feeder performance hinges on aligning feed rate with downstream demand. VSD integration allows operators to adjust speed to protect secondary equipment from surges, while soft-start and stop reduce stress on components like return rollers and tail shafts. At high tonnages per hour or lighter feed cycles, apron feeders equipped with VSD keep material moving without overloading the circuit.

MPT’s standard apron feeder designs allow for greater spares flexibility across a wide range of applications. Apron feeders supplied by MPT come with significant cost and lead-time benefits for mining operations that need to keep downtime low.

Push Feeders: Controlled Flow for Demanding Applications

Where apron feeders handle heavy primary extraction, the push feeder maintains a steady and controlled material flow from bins into downstream processing equipment.

MPT’s push feeder assembly includes a heavy-duty welded steel frame bolted to the bin support structure, machined to align the support rollers. The push feeder plate, machined and hardened steel, transmits cylinder force to push feed out of the bin. Replaceable hardened steel liners are bolted to the plate to protect it from wear and impact.

The support structure features slotted holes for easy adjustment of the feeder plate’s position in the horizontal plane, designed to meet specific process requirements. MPT tailors each push feeder to match the appropriate material characteristics and width specifications required for reliable performance, regardless of feed weight or processing conditions.

Pan Feeders: Heavy-Duty Simplicity

Pan feeders round out MPT’s material handling offering with a focus on durability and low-cost services over the machine’s life. Installed on mechanical springs that absorb shock and reduce component wear, MPT’s pan feeders are designed for demanding applications.

A heavy-duty welded steel support frame keeps each pan feeder steady under load, while hardwearing VRN liners protect against abrasive feed material. Regular maintenance on these liners is necessary during high-throughput periods; however, their durability reduces the overall maintenance required. Periodic cleaning also helps achieve consistent performance.

Pan feeders work well in applications where material flow is low-to-medium. Many operations achieve the best results by combining feeder types, using an apron feeder to draw bulk ROM from a hopper while a pan feeder meters material further downstream.

Why Choose MPT?

MechProTech builds its feeders to perform and to fit. Modular designs mean units arrive pre-assembled and built for quick commissioning, reducing installation time regardless of distance to the site. All equipment is supplied with surfaces primed to international corrosion protection standards. See MPT’s completed projects for examples of feeders in operation.

MPT’s aftermarket services include:

  • Onsite installation guidance
  • Spare parts services with cost and lead-time benefits
  • Refurbishment services for worn machines
  • Ongoing maintenance advisory services

This ongoing support protects equipment performance and helps operators manage the total cost of ownership.
