Grinding Media
About Grinding Media
- Ball mills – Charged with forged or cast steel balls, generally 25–100 mm, a ball mill delivers high grinding force at a stable, controlled speed. MPT TITAN™ Ball Mills are designed to run at up to 80% of critical speed with a 40% ball charge, and operate bi-directionally so that liner and media wear is spread evenly through the shell.
- Rod mills – Charged with steel rods of 50–100 mm diameter running the full length of the shell, rod mills grind by line contact rather than point contact. The result is a coarser, more uniform product with fewer slimes, which makes them well suited to primary grinding ahead of gravity or flotation circuits. Where the mill is compartmented, rods are loaded in the first bin and steel balls or segments in the bins that follow.
- Pebble and gravel mills – Where iron contamination cannot be tolerated, the charge is made up of pebbles, gravel, sandstone or ceramic balls, running against porcelain, rubber or granite liners. These mills are widely used in cement, ceramics and industrial minerals applications.

Grinding media
Steel balls, rods and non-metallic media, sized and charged to suit your mill, your ore and your target grind. Full sizing and charge data in the specification sheet.
Benefits
Grinding media is the largest single consumable in a milling circuit, and its selection has a direct effect on throughput, power draw and final product size. Media that is correctly sized and charged for the ore and for the mill it runs in delivers a consistent grind at a predictable kWh per tonne. Media that is not shows up quickly as over-grinding, accelerated liner wear, or a mill that cannot hold its design tonnage.
Choosing between steel balls, steel rods and non-metallic media is a question of duty. Steel balls give the highest grinding force and suit fine grinding at stable speed. Rods grind by line contact, producing a coarser and more uniform product with fewer slimes, which keeps them a strong primary grinding option. Pebble, gravel and ceramic media are used where iron contamination cannot be tolerated. MPT will advise on the media type, size distribution and charge volume best suited to your mill and your ore, and can match the charge to the shell dimensions, drive power and liner profile of any TITAN™ mill we supply.
